In many countries, the public is not aware of the serious health problems and environmental harm that persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and other chemical pollutants cause. The Stockholm Convention on POPs recognizes the importance of, and requires, the full participation of an informed civil society without which no significant progress can be made in implementing effective actions to protect public health and the environment.
