Morocco’s water resources are limited due to its semi-arid climate. The town of Sidi Yahia is particularly affected by the problem of pollution, because of its growing population and industrial development.
However, the use of raw wastewater represents a potential pollution risk to the environment, water resources, and users. Our study dealt with the physicochemical characterization of raw wastewater.
The sampling took place over a period of 3 months. The average temperature varied between 19.5 and 24.8°C, and the pH was in the slightly neutral range (7.0 and 8.1). Electrical conductivity ranged from 1245 to 2210 μS/cm, the redox potential varied -1.18 and -0.10 mV, the salinity ranged from 0.4 to 0.90 g/l. The average dissolved oxygen values varied 0.40 and 0.77 mg/l, turbidity ranged from 72.8 to 288 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU), the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) ranged from 90 to 445 mg/l of O₂, and suspended matter ranged from 45.5 to 55.3 mg/l. The analyses obtained show varying levels of fluctuation in certain parameters, the wastewater of Tiflet Wadi proved to be of poor to very poor quality.
