The water situation in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is precarious. Population and development have overwhelmed traditional management practice and problems at water scarcity and pollution are as severe as anywhere in the world .Within one lifetime (1960 to 2025) per capita renewable supplies will have fallen from 3,430 cubic meters to 667 cubic meters, and in several countries of the region renewable freshwater will barely cover basic human needs into the next century. Rivers and aquifers crossing national borders lead to conflicts and difficult issues of effective resource management.
