The nitrate-nitrogen contents of soils in the rainfed cereal production region of th Syrian Arab Republic (SAR) appeared to be highly correlated with uptake of nitrogen by cereal corps during the growing seasons.

The determination of nitrate-nitrogen in soils at sowing could therefore be used as a basis for the assessment of plant-available nitrogen in soil and thus, as a basic for nitrogen fertilizer recommendations.

Other factors to be considered in nitrogen fertilize recommendations would be the cost and availability of fertilizers and the expected benefit of the fertilizer application; crop variety, cropping system and expected potential yield; estimated crop nitrogen requierement; nitrogen dynamics and transformation in the soil during the growing season; and the nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency, as related to source of nitrogen and rate, method and timing of nitrogen application...
