The geography of the country is diversified
and characterized by a mountainous
Northern coast [Rif Mountains], interior
mountains [Middle Atlas, High Atlas,
and Anti-Atlas] with bordering plateaus,
intermountain valleys and rich coastal plains, in addition to the desert landscape in the South. The arable land is about 9 million hectares. An estimated 80% of Morocco's arable land is arid or semi-arid, and the irrigated surface covers about 1.4 Million hectares. Morocco has made food self-sufficiency a key objective of its agricultural policy. This has enabled it to ensure the coverage of a significant
portion of its needs in staple food products,
despite rising domestic market demand.
Animal food products are becoming
increasingly important components of the
diets of people in Morocco and this trend
is expected to accelerate through the next
two decades.
