The climate of the Maltese islands is typically mediterranean with characteristic mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The average annual precipitation is 530 mm. Rainfall is highly variable from year to year ; some years are excessively wet while others are extemely dry. The seasonal distribution of rainfall defines a wet period.
